RIVER TOWNS PLEIN AIR 2021

artist information

general information

Artists 18 years or older are eligible to register for the River Towns Plein Air 2021 Competition and Exhibit.  Registration constitutes agreement that images may be used for web and print promotional purposes.

DISCLAIMER:  None of the involved groups (including Marietta Art Alive!, the Marietta Community House, the Borough of Marietta, and Rivertownes PA USA) are responsible for personal injury and illness  or damage/loss/theft of artwork that may happen during the entire event.    Artists must provide their own insurance coverage if desired.  In addition, artists are responsible for their own personal safety during the event.  Registration constitutes the artist's agreement with all rules and statements made here.

HOW TO REGISTER:  Each artist must pay a $30 registration fee. The fee is non-refundable regardless if the artist produces any artwork for the final judging and exhibition. An exception to the refund will be made only in the case that organizers cancel the event.

Rules of the competition

MEDIA:  Any medium used to create 2-dimensional art--oils, acrylics, watercolors, pencil, pastel, and charcoal are permissible.  Other materials and mediums may be acceptable with permission of the Plein Air committee.

PLEIN AIR DEFINITION: All paintings must be completed “en plein air” described as painting in the open air, working directly from the landscape or scene as it appears at that moment, without the aid of photos or more than a few marks afterward in the studio.  Porches, gazebos, and pavilions can be used as shelter while painting; artists are responsible for gaining necessary permissions.

PAINT OUT AREA:  A map description and listing of paint out area can be found here.

SUBJECT MATTER:  Subject matter is anything observed while standing within the confines of the River Towns Plein Air Paint Out Area.  Designated sites were selected with the Susquehanna River in mind, but we encourage artists to paint the beautiful architecture, street scenes, wildlife, people, etc., that also can be found in this area.

DOCUMENT THE PAINTING PROCESS:   One of the following two processes must be used to document your plein air submissions:

Time and Location-Stamped Process

If using a timestamp camera app, the settings should be configured to display the date, time, and location.  For each painting, take a picture of the blank paper/canvas and another picture of the finished painting.  Included in your photo should be a view of the scene. Photos shown are from a different event.  This process applies to each painting session

Apps that have been approved for this use are as follows:

For Iphones or IPad:   Download Free App:  Timestamp Camera Basic

Description:  Automatically insert current time and address when taking photo or video in real time, you can change time format or select the address around easily. Timestamp Camera is the only App that can record video with the time watermark accurate to millisecond(0.001 second).    More details here:  https://apps.apple.com/us/app/timestamp-camera-basic/id840110184

For Android Phones:  Download Free App:  PhotoStamp Camera Free

Here is a YouTube video by "Tech Angel" who walks you through the settings (it's simple):  https://youtu.be/9AVFoHDGFYo

Also read the questions and answers below the video, that is helpful too.

Stamped Canvas/Paper Process

The event committee will be available at 42 W Market St., Marietta PA (front of Express Laundry) from 8-10 AM on April 13, 2021, for those who prefer this manual process.

SUBMISSION OF ARTWORK:

Submit paintings as you go.  Go to https://www.mariettaartalive.com/addlabel each time you complete a painting.  The information gathered here will be used to create labels for the show.  This is also where you upload the two time- and location-stamped photos you take from each painting session.  The password is “rtpa” – all lower case.  For artists who plan to get a canvas/paper stamp instead, you will need to fill out the label portion of the form and check the box for “I used the canvas/paper backstamp method.”

At the end of the paint-out period, artists may enter up to three of the submitted paintings for display and sale.  Of the three entries, two may be included in the judging.  Artwork entries must have been created on-site within the River Towns Plein Air Area or a Designated Painting Site from April 13-21, 2021 to be eligible for entry into the show and for awards.  Artists are free to paint any time of day or night during this period.  All work must be wired for hanging and presented with a frame or finished edge as with a cradles panel.  All work must have a professional appearance.  Artwork that is unfinished or unprofessional in appearance may be disqualified from the judging and exhibition.

EXHIBIT AND DISPLAY SET UP:  The RTPA committee will provide display panels for use at this show.  Artists must bring their own easels to use in case there are not enough display panels available for all artwork during the 3-day public exhibit and sale at Studio 264, Marietta Community House, 264 W Market St., Marietta, PA.

Organizers will make every effort to ensure patrons are a sufficient distance from the displayed artwork. The exhibit building will be locked overnight. Two or more volunteers will be on hand during the exhibit hours to ensure the safety of artwork.

SALE OF ARTWORK:  All artwork must be for sale. A 30% commission will benefit the Marietta Community House, a non-profit 501(3)c organization. Artists receive 70% of amount received for their paintings.  A PA sales tax of 6% will be collected at the time of sale. Marietta Art Alive! is responsible for the payment of PA Sales Tax.

JUROR:  The Juror of Awards is Julie Riker.  Read about her here.

AWARDS:  Awards will be presented for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place entries, people's choice, numerous honorable mentions, and a "first timer" award for best painting by an artist competing in their first plein air competition.
